2014 was an eventful year for us because we had the opportunity to work closely with Astro (the official broadcaster of the 2014 FIFA World Cup) for their Planet Gempak Ola Bola carnival. Our involvement in this carnival was based at three sites: KL, Penang and Ipoh.
We were called in to propose football-themed activities to engage with the carnival crowd. On the technical and logistics side, we were tasked to set up canopies, design the stage, do lights and sound, and source for talents to perform at the carnival site.
The Game Plan
We organised for simple games like kick a ball into a goal post to win a prize and hired an emcee to entertain the crowd with World Cup questionnaires, whereby winners won official FIFA merchandises. We also arranged for a samba dance performance with performers dressed in costumes to entertain the crowd, in honour of Brazil being the official venue host for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Apart from setting up the technical requirements, our technical support team rented bicycles to increase our productivity and efficiency while we worked at the carnival. We consistently cycled around to survey the crowd and were able to transport small items over to our event site. Our bicycle strategy saved us a lot of energy for tasks that required our body strength.
Astro’s Planet Gempak Ola Bola was a huge success. The football season attracted families, couples and groups of friends to the carnival. We recorded an estimated figure of 20,000 people across all three carnivals.
